Why Home Decor Matters?
Home Decor matters because how we live and decorate our home becomes part of our identity. Susan Clayton, an environmental psychologist at the College of Wooster, said it best:
Our home and home decor matter as our homes are an extension of ourselves. Our homes and the way we live become part of our identity.
I remember visiting my sister in California; she lived in a housing development where all the houses had the same color, shape, and size. I could only tell her home from the other places because she had a small terracotta walkway.
Many of the neighbors would go into each other’s houses and compare what each person had done with the inside of their house. This is because of their home and how it was decorated as part of their identity.
Our homes and how we decorate them matter as they are part of our identity.
Our 10 Reasons Why Home Decor Matters
Home decor can be one of the most fun projects you take on as a homeowner, but it’s also an essential part of life. It doesn’t just make your home feel more comfortable, welcoming, and tailored to your style; the right decor choices have benefits beyond what meets the eye.
Here are our top 10 reasons why home decor matters:
1 -Home Decor Matters As You Live In Your Home
Home decor matters because you live in your home; most of us spend a lot of time in our homes. Because of our time in our homes, how we decorate our homes does matter.
We must surround ourselves with things that we enjoy or things that we like. As Winston Churchill once wisely said:
Winston Churchill pointed out that our homes become part of our identity. They become part of who we are and what is important to us.
2 – Home Decor Matters As Your Home Tells Your Story
When you visit another person’s home, you can tell so much about that person by their home decor. A person’s home will tell the stories of their life.
The iconic English designer David Hicks said it best when he said
As David Hicks pointed out, our homes tell the story of our lives; our home decor is like our own personal storybook.
3 – Home Decor Matters As Your Home Reflects Who You Are
Because telling your story, our homes also say to the world who we are and what we stand for. For example, does your home have a lot of family pictures around? People will understand that family is important to you. If your home has a lot of art, it may show you are an art lover.
Our tastes and how we decorate our homes tell a lot about each of us. Billy Baldwin. a New York decorator, said this very best when he said:
I have always appreciated my parent’s home because my mother always had a keen eye for mixing and matching essential things in our family. My grandfather lived in China, so we have many Chinese artifacts. My mother is from Sweden, so we have many things from Sweden. My mother could always mix Asian and European looks; it has never gone out of style.
4 – Home Decor Matters As Your Home Decor Can Affect Your Mood
Home decor and how your home is decorated can affect your mood. When I lived in Thailand, I had an orange wall; somebody told me I should not have an orange one because it would make me sick and angry. But actually, the opposite was true – when I looked at that orange wall and the art and other things I had on it – it made me happy.
Home decor and how you decorate your home can affect your mood. As John Saldino so eloquently said:
Our home decoration and decor should lift us both emotionally and spiritually. For me, light is essential. I like to live in a home that has natural light. I find having light lifts me both emotionally and spiritually.
5- Home Decor Matters As It Can Nourish Us
Our home decor should nourish and uplift us. It should be where we can put our feet up from the world’s cares and be ourselves. Our home decor is about understanding our lifestyle and what is important to us.
I love this bit of wisdom from Albert Hadley about the importance of design:
Our home should be where we are comfortable and fit our lifestyle. This lifestyle can change as our lives change. Maybe you love a white sofa, but you have young children, so it’s not practical; your style can vary according to what fits into your lifestyle.
6 -Home Decor Matters As it Can Affect Your Work
More people than ever work from home, so our home life can affect our professional life. Having a comfortable place in your home to work can help you be more effective and efficient in your professional life.
Albert Handley also wisely said:
It would be best if you decorated your home as comfortably as possible so that you can live life to the fullest. If you work from home, then have an area in your home to help your professional life grow.
7 – Your Home Decor Can Affect Your Health and Well-being
I believe that your home decor will affect your health and well-being. Light is essential to me. If I am in a dark room, it is much easier for me to sleep in and not get up to exercise or do those things I need to do to be healthy.
Your home decor can and will affect your overall health and well-being. The decor in your house should inspire you to want to be the best you can be. The famous designer Mark Hampton said:
Use your home decor so that it helps to inspire you to be the best you can be. Ensure that every room in your house is visually and physically appealing so you want to be home.
8 – Your Home Decor Should Be Comfortable
Your home decor should be comfortable; if your home is unsatisfied, it is like living in a museum or showplace. I have always enjoyed homes a little bit lived in, and you can tell that the home’s occupants live there and enjoy the house. For, I am a great believer that a home should be lived in and not just be a showplace.
I love this quote by Staci Risenmay:
This is the kind of home I grew up in and my home now. All my furniture is mostly leftover samples we produced at one time or another; somehow, I find a way to make this mismatched look work for me and my home decor.
9 – Home Decor Matters Because it is Important To You
Your home and decor should be vital because they are essential to you. I have been into many homes where I felt the home decor was unimportant to the occupants. Usually, those homes were disorganized and messy. The people living there did not care much about taking care of their homes and the things they had in their homes.
Home decorating should be vital because it is essential to you. I love this quote by Dr. Seuss:
As Dr. Suess pointed out, we can choose our homes, home decor, and home environment as necessary. We can decide to make this an essential aspect of our lives.
10 – Home Decor Matters As Our Homes Are A Gathering Place
A home should be a place where you can gather and where family, friends, and loved ones can feel welcome and comfortable. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than going into someone’s home, or you are so nervous that you will break something or spill something; you spend your whole time on edge and very uncomfortable.
This is why I believe good home decor is a home where people can gather and enjoy one another’s company. As Kimberly Schlapman eloquently said:
Whether you gather in the kitchen, the living room, the family room, or another room, it does not matter, but there should be a place in your home where people can gather and enjoy themselves. A great home decor is a place where people can gather and feel welcome.
Home decor does matter because our home decor can affect so many areas of our life.
