In the dynamic design sphere, game-changing ideas often germinate from identified gaps, unique viewpoints, or the mere flicker of creative thought. Such a metamorphosis was triggered for the forward-thinking pair,
Jim and Penny Hull, fueled by their aspiration to create inventive and stimulating furniture for their children, stray far from the constraints of conventional designs.
Jim, trained as an architect, and his wife, Penny, a primary school teacher, could not find furnishings that met their criteria for what they believed their children deserved in the urban environment of the time. Seeking to bridge this gap, they combined their skills and expertise, forming H.U.D.D.L.E., an acronym for Hull Urban Design Development Laboratory, Etc.
This venture marked the beginning of their journey in creating robust, fascinating, and uniquely delightful furniture that their children and others would find intriguing and enjoy using.
Their mission wasn’t just to miniaturize adult furniture for children’s use. Instead, they aimed to create a fresh concept that appreciated children’s active imaginations and inherent love for play-acting, climbing, hiding, drawing, sliding, and coloring.
They sought to develop furniture that would stimulate creativity, spark imagination, and add comfort and flexibility to children’s lives.
The Big Toobs Bed Was Created
With their first child, Heather, and a second, Kory, on the way, the Hulls embarked on this venture in 1970. Being raised in small towns, they fondly remembered the adventure and excitement of having tree houses and hideaways.

The Hull’s unique furniture system was designed to be both safe and sturdy. They incorporated a range of primary colors like green, yellow, red, and blue and created components that could be assembled in various ways to meet the evolving needs of growing children.
Their catalog included adjustable add-on shelves, trundle beds, bunk beds, loft beds, slant-top desks, and chairs adjustable from 13 to 17 inches. These pieces were designed to be virtually indestructible and could be purchased individually or as a set.
Their multifunctional approach to design was epitomized by pieces such as the “child space art gym,” combining a slide, a painting easel, and a puppet theater. They also offered chests that could begin as single, low, and shadowy storage spaces for young children and then be stacked to grow alongside the child, ultimately reaching the capacity needed for college.
Their innovative furniture was available through H.U.D.D.L.E. retail stores in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Ana, California. The Hulls continued to design and offer various innovative pieces, earning recognition and accolades.
Groundbreaking Huddlecouch
The Resources Council of Southern California recognized their groundbreaking Huddlecouch, while their novel crib-chest unit, launched in 1979, received another award.
