If you have ever wanted to remove a paint stain from some wood surface, you may wonder how. Commercial paint removers will remove the old paint, varnish, and most other finishes, but they will not remove wood stains, which are more like a dye that has soaked into the wood itself.
If you need to lighten wood, vinegar is not what you should use as it will not lighten wood, but it is used mainly to stop wood from lightening any more than you want. We recommend using one of two kinds of wood lightening solutions to lighten wood or remove dark wood spots from previous stains or finishes.

Vinegar Will Not Lighten Wood
If you are looking for a way to lighten your wood, vinegar is not your answer. Vinegar will only help you to stop the wood from getting lighter than you want it to be.
If you are bleaching your wood, and you find that the wood is getting too light, you can use vinegar to wipe the wood to stop the wood from getting any lighter. The vinegar reacts oppositely to bleaching, and it stops the bleaching process.
About Products To Use To Lighten Or Bleach Wood
The only effective way to bleach or light in your wood is to use a wood bleach. Sanding will not help to lighten the wood, but only wood bleach will help to lighten the wood.
About Household Bleach And Wood
Although it may be possible to use ordinary liquid laundry bleach to lighten the stains or sections of a piece of wood, this type of bleach is not recommended as it is hard to control and is not as effective as wood bleach. Also, if you use regular laundry bleach, it may give your finished product a type of blotchy effect.
The chlorine bleach or the standard household bleach solution that is sodium hypochlorite will kill mildew on your deck and outdoor furniture and remove any dye-based stains. It will not remove any pigment stains from the wood.
We do not recommend using household bleach as it will not lighten your wood correctly; it can irritate the skin and mucous membranes.
Two Types Of Wood Bleaching Solutions
We recommend that you use a wood bleaching solution that is made to lighten wood and remove stains. Go to your local hardware or paint store, and they should have some solutions they can recommend.
To lighten wood or to bleach wood, the wood finishers use two types of wood bleach, which are as follows:
- Oxalic Acid – Oxalic acids come in a crystal form and must be mixed with water before use.
- Two-Part Bleach Solution – The other type of wood bleach is a two-part solution where you apply the substance in two steps.
Oxalic acid is usually the least expensive of the two options, the easiest and the quickest to apply. But the downfall with the Oxalic acid is that it is not as strong as a two-part bleach solution.
Oxalic acid is usually an excellent option to use if you want to lighten the color of the wood a bit as the wood has darkened due to age or if you want to bring the wood back to its original tone and hue.
But if you have very dark stains that need to be removed, you may need to use the two-part bleach solution.
Instructions To Lighten Your Wood Finishes
If you are going to use either the Oxalic acid or the two-part solution, there are steps that you should take to ensure your safety.
- Wear Mask And Protective Gloves – Whenever you work with bleach or any bleach products, you should always wear a mask and protective gloves.
- Clean Off The Wood Surface – Make sure the wood surface is immaculate and dry.
- Wipe The Wood Surface – Wipe the wood surface using your solution with a cloth. We recommend using a nylon pad.
- Lighten Wood To Your Desired Amount – Lighten the wood to the desired color or amount of light that you want.
The main thing is that you will use a cloth to wipe down the wood, wait for the wood to become light and then check if you want it to be lighter. When wiping it down, ensure it is not too heavy or too soft, but use a medium amount of pressure.
The key is to repeat the wood wiping down as many times as you want until the wood is the color you want.
Once the wood is the color you want, you can apply paint or a clear coat on it to seal the wood and stain. Many top coats may also darken or yellow the wood slightly.
To lighten or bleach wood, here are the things we do at the factory, and they are something you can also do at home for some of your home finishing projects. Like any wood finishing projects, you must use the right supplies and products.
