silk is considered one of the finest

Fabrics globally and it's expensive

because it has limited availability

0:24
limited hi this is Anita from the global
0:28
trade gal today we're going to talk
0:30
about fabric yes we're going to talk
0:33
about fabric that material that you have
0:36
to for your clothes and tablecloths and
0:40
all hosts of other things because so
0:43
many things are made out of fabric in
0:46
today particular I want to talk a little
0:48
bit about silk and why silk fabric is
0:52
expensive and then some of the things
0:53
that Silk can be used for if you're
0:56
going to be purchasing any type of
0:58
product whether it's a product that uses
1:01
Fabric or you're going to be you know
1:04
decide you're going to design some
1:05
clothing you're going to design some
1:08
home decor you're going to design
1:10
anything that could use fabric it's
1:12
important that you understand a lot
1:14
about the fabric that you're going to be
1:17
using and today I'm going to talk a
1:19
little bit about silk just because I
1:21
really love silk and I think silk is
1:23
quite an interesting
1:25
fabric you know silk is considered one
1:27
of the finest Fabrics globally and it's
1:31
expensive because it has limited
1:33
availability meaning that it really is
1:37
something that not every country can
1:39
produce and it is something that is
1:42
limited this is going to be true for
1:45
anything you're going to be buying for a
1:47
product if it has a limited
1:50
availability there usually will be a
1:53
premium price attached with it it has to
1:57
do with the principle of supply and
1:59
demand
2:01
you know extracting silk from the
2:04
Cocoon proteins is actually a very
2:08
expensive and labor intensive
2:12
process it takes 5,000 silk worms to
2:17
produce one kilo of silk let me repeat
2:21
that because I think that's an amazing
2:24
statistic 5,000 silk worms to produce
2:28
one kilo of silk that means that you
2:31
need to have a lot of silk worms to be
2:34
able to produce your silk tie your silk
2:37
scarf your silk jacket or or whatever it
2:41
is you know totally around the world
2:44
there's about
2:46
168,000 kilog of silk that's produced
2:50
yearly that's you know equal to
2:51
somewhere around you over 300,000 pounds
2:55
China still continues to be the largest
2:58
producer of silk and they produce over
3:02
126,000 kilog you know behind that is
3:05
actually Vietnam and India but you can
3:08
see that theirs is still quite a bit
3:10
less than China which produces probably
3:13
about 75% of all the silk in the world
3:17
is coming from
3:18
China the production of silk is
3:21
extremely labor
3:24
intensive you know they have to the silk
3:26
has to be you know uh you have to have
3:28
the caterpillars to spend the cocoons
3:30
and you have to harvest it you have to
3:32
extract the silk threads from the Cocoon
3:35
and actually all of these caterpillars
3:37
have to eat what's called a malberry
3:39
tree so you know the malberry trees are
3:42
also Limited in their supply so all of
3:45
this helps to be able to limit a product
3:48
like
3:49
Silk and it and it it means that it's
3:52
extremely labor intensive to
3:54
produce it also means that silk
3:57
production is a relatively slow process
3:59
it is a very old process that's been
4:01
around for thousands of years and really
4:04
a lot of the processing hasn't changed
4:06
that much in that amount of
4:08
time so silk is one of these things
4:12
which really is extremely labor
4:15
intensive what's fascinating about silk
4:18
is there's so many things that you can
4:19
make out of silk or things in the past
4:22
that have been made out of silk that
4:24
it's really quite a versatile
4:27
fabric so you know here are some things
4:30
that can be made out of silk of course
4:31
you know fashion is one of the
4:33
industries which is used a lot for silk
4:35
you know everything from silk shirts and
4:37
ties and blouses if you're interested to
4:40
see a list I've written a Blog about it
4:41
what things are made from silk and you
4:43
can see a list of a lot of the basic
4:46
products that are still made from silk
4:47
today you know silk pajamas silk jackets
4:49
silk scarves silk ties you know also for
4:53
the home decor industry any of you that
4:54
are in the home decor industry like I am
4:57
you know thec are Sil you know pillows
4:59
so cushions um silk quilts and
5:02
comforters
5:03
pillowcases lamp shades upholstery
5:07
fabric silk curtains a lot of people
5:09
still use silk curtains silk blankets um
5:12
it's used for silk wallpaper silk wall
5:15
coverings and trimmings and even jewelry
5:18
has been made out of
5:19
silk you know there's some interesting
5:22
uses of silk that I never even knew
5:24
existed which I want to talk about
5:26
because it shows how sometimes
5:28
Innovative people can be about things
5:30
are how people were in the past in the
5:33
past a lot of people use silk for
5:35
parachutes and the reason why they use
5:38
silk was because silk was a lightweight
5:41
Fabric and it was extremely strong of
5:45
course today the parachutes are made of
5:47
nylon but in the past you know silk was
5:50
used to be able to make
5:53
parachutes silk was also used for
5:55
gunpowder bags I had no idea about this
5:59
but the reason was is because when you
6:00
had the gunpowder for the bullets you
6:03
know you didn't want to have it in your
6:04
pocket you didn't want to have it in
6:05
some other bags that that you know could
6:07
have problems so they' put gunpowder in
6:09
these small little silk uh pouches so
6:13
that the gunpowder wouldn't rub together
6:14
and explode so it was used as a way to
6:17
be able to protect the
6:19
gunpowder today silk is being used in
6:23
bike tires you know for a long time bike
6:26
tires have been using cotton but there's
6:28
been um some silk has been used for
6:31
these casings of
6:33
high-end um you know track tubular tires
6:36
for the racing bikes and several of the
6:39
people that have used these have said
6:41
that they really love silk because silk
6:44
has made for a lot smoother ride than
6:47
the cotton ones I find this fascinating
6:50
because I myself am a cyclist and I
6:52
enjoy cycling and I had no idea that
6:54
there were bicycle tires that are really
6:57
considered premium bicycle tires again
7:00
but because they're more expensive than
7:02
of course the other variety but there
7:04
are many of the professional bike racers
7:07
now who have been saying that they
7:08
prefer to have the silk
7:11
tires because I'm a lover of History I
7:14
want to also tell a little history or or
7:16
something that I find fascinating about
7:18
silk and if anyone has been to Thailand
7:21
you need to stop by and you need to see
7:23
the Jim Thompson house there and Jim
7:26
Thompson came to Thailand in the 40s I
7:28
think it was during World War II and you
7:31
know he was sort of a bit of a um he was
7:34
a creative person he had been an
7:35
architect and he began to see the silk
7:37
Weavers there in Bangkok and he started
7:40
to design fabrics for them and began to
7:44
say hey I think the fashion houses in
7:46
New York would be interested in this and
7:48
they were and so he built up quite a a
7:51
very good silk business there so even
7:54
still today in Thailand you can visit
7:56
the Jim Thompson House you can find out
8:00
and learn more you about Jim Thompson
8:04
and you can also go and you can visit
8:05
his shop there in Bankok
8:08
Thailand what is fascinating about this
8:10
with Jim Thompson not only today is he
8:12
considered one of the top silk brands in
8:14
the world for Home Furnishing home decor
8:18
and fashion and not only does he have
8:20
many great designs that are still being
8:22
used today but in the 1960s Jim Thompson
8:26
disappeared from the highlands in
8:29
Malaysia and he was never found his body
8:32
was never found and nobody knows exactly
8:35
what happened to him there are some
8:37
people that think that maybe he was
8:39
known to be a spy and so he was killed
8:41
as a spy because he had done some work
8:43
supposedly for what would have um been
8:46
something like the CIA or done some
8:49
Secret Service work and there's other
8:51
who think that maybe a tiger at him they
8:54
really they do not know what happened to
8:57
him it was one of the largest manhunts
8:59
ever
9:00
in Malaysia to try to find him in the
9:02
highlands and they found no traces of
9:04
him at all he just disappeared off the
9:06
face of the Earth but yet today his
9:09
legacy and his life continues to live on
9:13
through the Jim Thompson brand and the
9:16
Jim Thompson house which is located in
9:18
Bangkok Thailand so if you happen to go
9:22
visit Bangkok Thailand do stop into the
9:25
Jim Thompson shop which is still on Sur
9:28
Wong Road and look at the amazing silk
9:31
products that are being manufactured
9:33
there and also take the time to go see
9:35
the Jim Thompson house which is full of
9:38
some wonderful Thai artifacts and is a
9:40
wonderful Thai style house his legacy of
9:43
silk continues to live on through the
9:45
Jim Thompson brand well this is Anita
