Brass and Nickel Similarities Explained
Even though Brass and Nickel are two different colored metals, they have some similarities. Some of their similarities include:
- Metals – Brass and nickel are metals used for home decor and home furnishing accessories and products. Brass has a warm yellow-golden color, and Nickel is a silver color that can look almost like silver.
- Both Can Be Electroplated – They are metal finishes that can be electroplated. You often see electroplating of brass and nickel, particularly when it comes to faucets for the bathroom, home furniture hardware or other items. Brass is a golden brown color, and Nickel is a silver color.
- Both Contain Copper – Even though they may be different colors, Brass and Nickel contain copper alloy in differing amounts. Brass contains copper and zinc; nickel silver will contain copper, zinc, and nickel, and nickel alloy will nickel and steel.
- Home Decor and Home Furnishing Usage – They are both vital metal looks and finishes for the home decor and furnishing industry. Both finishes can be used for fine furniture and accessories, hardware, light fixtures, table lamps, candleholders, faucets, and other home decor and home furnishing items.
Brass and Nickel Differences Explained
Even though both Brass and Nickel can have similar properties, they also have some unique differences.
What Is Brass?
Brass is a golden yellow-brown color-looking metal. The color of Brass makes it easily distinguishable from Nickel which has a silver color.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that is very hard but also very workable in various shapes and forms; how malleable Brass is depended on the zinc content.
The brass alloy that contains more than 45% of zinc is not workable, either hot or cold. White Brass has very little industrial importance as it is too hard to work with.
Brass is a metal known for its beauty, resilience, and durability. Different color variations can vary depending on the proportions of copper to zinc.
One of the beauties of Brass is that it can be forged, cast, spun, die-cut, or wrought, where it can be used in many different ways and make many different shapes.
Brass has long been a preferred metal for fine furniture and accessories hardware, lighting fixtures, table lamps, fireplace equipment, candleholders, and other practical and decorative accessories.
Brass Finishes
One of the great things about Brass is its versatility and ability to be used in various finishes and colors. The fact that brass can have so many colors and finishes make it a perfect choice for home decor and home furnishing.
Here are some of the basic finishes for Brass:
- High-Polished Brass – A brass that is highly polished mirrored like finished.
- Satin Finish Brass – The satin finish is a dull, almost flat finish for brass that will give a golden muted brass color.
- Brushed Finish Brass – The brushed finish is Brass that is brushed with a unique tool that all go in the same direction so you can see visible lines on the brass finish.
- Verdigris Brass Finish – The verdigris brass finish is when the Brass is purposely aged or weathered to green.
- Antique Finish – The antique brass finish is darkened to look aged or old like an antique.
- Bronze – A bronze finish can give an antique look and feel.
Because Brass is finished in so many different looks and feels, it remains a trendy metal for either solid brass or plated brass for home decor at home furnishing products.
What Is Nickel?
Nickel is also known as nickel silver. It is from a range of alloy metals such as copper-nickel and zinc. Even though the metals are silvery, Nickel contains no silver. The nickel finish is darker than chrome and has an excellent versatile finish.
There are two types of Nickel:
- Nickel Finish – The nickel finish is darker than chrome. It can also have a brushed look like brushed nickel or be polished to a high shine.
- Nickel Silver – Nickel silver is an alloy that will have anywhere from 7 to 30% nickel, usually around 18% of what is known as nickel silver. By contrast, sterling silver would need to have at least 92.5% silver to be called sterling silver.
Because Nickel and silver can look similar, it is often used in jewelry, other home decor, and home furniture as it looks like silver.
Nickel is also known for its corrosion-resistant properties, making it an ideal metal used for many products.
Nickel Finishes
Like Brass, Nickel can also be finished in a variety of finishes. Nickel is an ideal metal for home decor and home furnishing items.
Here are some of the significant finishes for Nickel:
- Polished Nickel – Polished Nickel is incredibly timeless. The nickel finish has a higher shine.
- Brushed Nickel – Brushed Nickel is a trendy finish for hardware and fixtures; a faint brush pattern is applied to it.
- Brush Antique Nickel – Brushed Antique Nickel is the same finish as brushed nickel, except the finish is made to look antique; some dark accents in the metal finish give it an antique look.
- Pearl or Matte Nickel – Pearl or Matte Nickel is a nickel finish with a matte look. It can be left without any finish on it as it is corrosion-resistant.
- Pewtered Nickel – Pewtered Nickel is a nickel finish that gives a pewtered look and feel.
- Black Nickel Polish – Black nickel polish is a unique color where black is placed on the nickel to give a black nickel look.
As you can see, both Brass and Nickel are versatile metals that can be finished with various looks and finishes. One of the great things about both metals is that they are excellent for Home Decor and Home Furnishing Products.
